Megaday No 10 Venue: Caerphilly RFC – Total Raised £17,207
In 2004, Megaday won the Caerphilly County Borough council Mayor’s award for outstanding contribution to the community.
As Megaday grew in size and popularity, we were getting inundated with requests from bands who wanted to take part, so to give more bands the opportunity to get involved, we held the first ever Megaday battle of the bands competition in which nine bands took part. The first ever Battle of the Bands competition was wom by Jaded, who later went on to headline Megaday Sunday in 2010. The main event on Megaday Sunday was headlined by top Madness tribute band called Baggy Trousers.
Unfortunately, even though we had planned the event in fine detail in with the police prior to Megaday, a police woman from outside the area, who was not familiar with Megaday, decided to close down the event 25 minutes early (for reasons only known to herself). This was heart-breaking for all involved, as we weren’t able to do the end of show tribute for Andrew and Paul. Organisers of Megaday and representatives of Caerphilly Town Council met with the police in the aftermath for an explanation. Although they wouldn’t comment on whether the police woman’s call was the right or wrong decision, they promised to be fully supportive of Megaday in the future, which in fairness, they always have.
In 2004, we also held our first ever Megaday fun run. It started in Abertridwr (near PGs childhood home) and took a 2.5 mile route through Caerphilly to CRFC. Over a hundred runners took part and it raised over £1000 for Velindre. We also made a promotional DVD this year and there was a “Video Diary” booth on site for people to leave messages. It was also the first year we finished Megaday with a fireworks display finale.
